Everything Shower Self-Check Power
Joanna Newark, Chief Storyteller and Breast Health Advocate, says:
“Looking good on the outside starts with feeling healthy on the inside. Between juggling work, supporting family, being a friend, daughter, sister or mother, our busy lives can make it easy to overlook or deprioritise looking after our health, but it’s crucial that we take the time to check in with ourselves.”
Jo, who is also a breast cancer survivor, took part in our Real Talk series to share her experience and why it's so important to educate ourselves on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer. Watch the full Real Talk episode below.
Myths and misconceptions
Breast cancer myths persist despite increased awareness. Let's debunk some common misconceptions and reveal the facts.
Myth: Only older people get breast cancer.
Fact: While the risk of breast cancer increases with age, it can affect people of all ages, including young adults and even teenagers.
Myth: Men can't get breast cancer.
Fact: Men have breast tissue too and can get breast cancer, although it's less common than in women.
Myth: I know it’s cancer because the breast is painful.
Fact: Breast cancer may not cause pain in the early stages. Pain is not a reliable indicator of breast cancer, and many cases are painless.
Myth: If you have a lump in your breast, it's definitely cancer.
Fact: Many breast lumps are benign (non-cancerous), such as cysts or fibroadenomas. However, any new lump should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
Myth: Wearing an underwire bra increases the risk of breast cancer.
Fact: There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that underwire bras cause breast cancer. Wearing any type of bra, including underwire bras, does not increase your risk.
